(1500 Woodward Ave) Mobile App Startups from Zero to a Million
Want to build your next software or mobile app idea into a
profitable company backed by private investors? Building a
software company in the Midwest is not easy, but you do have
some major advantages you can leverage to get the edge you
need to succeed. Sure, you don’t have access to hundreds of
venture capital firms managing billions of dollars all focused on
software startups like you would in Silicon Valley, but you do
have access to some great funding programs at the state and
local levels, an incredibly affordable cost of living, and some of
the best software development talent in the world right here in
Detroit. This presentation will give you a high-level roadmap of
how to leverage these and other great resources to scale your
startup from an idea into an agile MVP, and then into a
profitable company even if you don’t have much (or any) capital
or software development experience to start with.

(Lear 3rd Floor) Driving Behavior Change: Shifting Detroit Commuters to Shared Transportation
Over 50 billion solo commutes are taken every single year in the U.S. alone, with an average commute length of 15 miles each way. While a mosaic of modes exists for short distances and intracity commutes, longer commutes– the majority of which are drive alone—have not yet been addressed by technology or new mobility.
This is true for Detroit, as well – according to recent data, Detroit has seen a 16% increase in extra commuting which equals 20 extra minutes every day, or 76 hours commuting per year. As a city, Detroit is already at the forefront of transportation innovation, and employers like Bedrock are taking proactive measures to improve their employees’ commute experience through technology.
In this talk, learn more about how Scoop scaled to become the largest carpooling solution in the country that recently launched in Detroit in partnership with Bedrock. The presentation will highlight how Bedrock and Scoop partnered to launch a new shared transportation mode for the region and specific strategies to encourage commuter behavior change in the Motor City.

(213 West Wing) Capital Readiness and Access to Funding
Many entrepreneurs need funding to either start or grow a business.  It is not unusual for these individuals to put all their hopes for financial resources into one basket – traditional bank loans. Too often business owners are unaware of the various funding options that exists.  In addition, they are unsure of their ability to qualify for funding and may be too intimidated to contact alternative lenders to learn how they may benefit from available programs. In this timely discussion with Dr. Nicole Farmer, Grand Innovation's Executive Director and Founder of LifeLine Business Consulting Services, entrepreneurs will not only gain knowledge of grants, crowd-funding, micro-lending, and traditional lending, but they will be guided through an actual loan application checklist to help determine what it takes to be considered "capital ready."

Cryptos, in the current form, present a direct challenge to the sovereignty of governments, their ability to make policy, and their control of the financial system. Beyond the initial excitement for cryptos, in many parts of the world marketing, selling or trading cryptos is illegal and a criminal offence! Some explain this as genuine concerns for ensuring KYC, fighting money laundering or terrorist/criminal financing, as well as protecting against systemic risk. However, it is also possible to see that education and lack of knowledge play a big part in explaining this reactionary behavior, and that limited engagement by the proponents of cryptos with governments and regulators has not helped. We’ll discuss the likelihood of cryptos being adopted as a mainstream currency, and what would need to happen in order for that to be successful.

(Lear - 4th Floor) Primal Shopper: Unlocking the Shopper DNA to Drive Marketing Success
The nature of shopping seems very random – like shopper journeys intertwined in a retail chaos. The reality is our shopping behaviors are quite orderly, consistent, and predictable. Shoppers have innate motivations driving their decision making – think of it like a Shopper DNA. Primal Shopper is a diagnostic survey identifying shoppers’ predictable behaviors when purchasing within a product category. Think of Primal Shopper like Myers-Briggs for shoppers.

Primal Shopper is a result of over a decade of research and findings. The shopper research spans many product categories including grocery, automotive, mobile phones, hotels, restaurant, and consumer-packaged goods (coffee, dog food). The session will unveil the shopper DNA and typologies driving decisions in retail today. More importantly, how to leverage Primal motivations to gain a competitive advantage.

Specific topics include:
• Interactive session immersing attendees through first hand experience with the survey (Four surveys will be used within the session: dog food, grocery shopping, fast casual restaurants, mobile phones)
• An in-depth look into the motivations behind the Shopper DNA
• A review of eight shopper types and how to apply marketing tactics to drive conversion
• How to apply the survey within your marketing
